Elle Varner
All eyes were on Elle Varner when she visited “106 & Park” on Monday. The R&B songstress strut onto the stage in a short fringe dress, but she wasn’t always used to getting attention from guys.
“I’m still a dork,” said Elle, who was overweight in high school. “Sexy or not, I’m a sexy nerd.”
The BET Music Matters star is getting personal on her upcoming sophomore album 4 Letter Word.
“It’s an open letter. It’s my heart. It’s my feelings. It’s my growth,” she said of the follow-up to her 2012 debut Perfectly Imperfect. “I talked about a lot of the coming-of-age things that girls go through and now I’m a young woman and going through different stuff, so you’ll hear about it.”
She also coined her own style that she calls “trap jazz.”
“It’s the product of a girl who grew up listening to Ying Yang Twins and Ella Fitzgerald,” she said. “I like to keep the beat rocking, but I have those jazzy vocals. I can’t get away from that.”
Watch her performance of “Cold Case” below.
